On September 22-23rd 2024, the United Nations convened a ‘Summit for the Future’, aiming to adopt a ‘Pact for the Future’ setting out ambitions for development of ‘Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow’ out to 2030. It was implicitly recognizing that the present UN is not ‘fit for purpose’, and needs reform.
The Pact went through five revisions during the Summit. In the event, most opinions seemed to be that the final version was ‘vague’, ‘underwhelming’, and included ‘no timeframe’ for its implementation. The best that can be said for it was that it might form a starting point for future action.
Much more interesting from our point of view was the civil society submission from the ImPACT Coalition on Earth Governance, including ideas for
- A UN Parliamentary Assembly
- A permanent Global Citizens; Assembly
- A World Citizens’ Initiative
- A UN Civil Society Envoy
